Before his on-screen success, Adler spent decades behind the scenes in theater. He worked as a stage manager, producer, and director for over 50 Broadway productions, including the original production of My Fair Lady.

Adler transitioned to acting in his 60s, starting with a role in the 1991 TV series Brooklyn Bridge. He went on to appear in films such as Manhattan Murder Mystery and Synecdoche, New York, and had notable television roles in The Good Wife, Rescue Me, and Transparent.
